Shelly Hindle, Clinical Psychologist

DBT Programme Development & MED-DBT Training

I am a clinical psychologist, DBT programme developer and MED-DBT specialist working with complex, high-risk presentations across clinical and service settings.
My work focuses on delivering comprehensive DBT with fidelity while supporting teams and organisations to design and implement structured, sustainable DBT programmes. I specialise in the application of MED-DBT for multi-diagnostic eating disorder populations and other complex presentations requiring careful, principled implementation.
Alongside clinical leadership, I provide international training, supervision and consultation to services seeking to strengthen clinical capability, adherence and programme coherence within their teams.

Shelly Hindle is a Clinical Psychologist, programme developer, researcher and international trainer with over 20 years of experience delivering comprehensive Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) across public and private health settings.

Her work focuses on delivering the full DBT model with fidelity, while tailoring its implementation to meet the needs of specific populations. She has extensive experience providing DBT across adolescent, school and eating disorder settings. In eating disorder services, she has delivered outpatient DBT with both adolescents and adults, and has worked in adult residential and intensive day-programme settings.

Over the past decade, Shelly has been closely involved in the development and implementation of MED-DBT (Multi-diagnostic Eating Disorder DBT), a comprehensive DBT protocol that integrates eating disorder treatment within the full DBT framework for individuals with high-risk, complex and multi-diagnostic presentations. She has led and contributed to the implementation and evaluation of DBT STEPS-A within New Zealand schools, including publication of outcome data. She recently co-hosted the inaugural International MED-DBT Conference and is actively involved in research and publication in this area. She has presented at international conferences and previously served as the elected Chair of the Academy for Eating Disorders Special Interest Group for DBT and Suicide.

Shelly currently works within the public sector delivering and overseeing a MED-DBT programme for individuals with severe and multi-diagnostic eating disorders – one of the first programmes of its kind globally and the only dedicated service of this type in Australasia. The programme received a Mental Health Directorate Award for Innovation. Shelly provides training, supervision and consultation to individuals, teams and services across New Zealand and internationally.
